People’s Grocery is a health and wealth organization – our mission is to improve the health and economy of West Oakland through the local food system. We pursue positive community change and address social determinants of health through a food lens. We work to ensure that community self-determination plays a large part in the revitalization of low-income neighborhoods.
Movement Building Programs
We use food to build a movement. People’s Grocery creates spaces for residents, decision-makers, activists, and concerned individuals to collectively vision a local and equitable food system. These core programs build and strengthen the relationships necessary to create change in the health, economic, and food systems.
Urban Agriculture: The California Hotel is a low-income housing development in West Oakland where we manage a greenhouse enterprise program and garden; it’s also the site of a new partnership with the East Bay Asian Local Development Corporation. We sponsor programming, quarterly events, and enterprise opportunities with our greenhouse so residents can fully participate in the re-creation of the Hotel as a site for community gathering.
Growing Justice Institute: Our program that brings together leaders in the West Oakland community to exchange ideas and share valuable training in community organizing, fundraising, and economic and racial justice. The Institute’s participants develop projects and campaigns to improve community health through food, and to centralize resident voices in food and health systems change.
Grub Box: Our food distribution program, in partnership with Dig Deep Farms and Produce, provides subsidized weekly produce boxes to West Oakland families facing financial challenges and to institutions like Highland Hospital. People’s Grocery connects Grub Box subscribers to the food justice movement through nutrition education and issue engagement. 2011 Grub Box members please take our survey. Thanks.
