Walden West, formerly known as Redwood Glen, is a residential outdoor school for fifth and sixth graders. Each session spans five days and four nights during which students accompanied by their classroom teacher, live and learn in an outdoor environment. The program is operated on the premise that students learn best through hands on activities and takes advantage of 2500 acres of ideal study area. Lessons in the natural sciences are brought to life with the hope that through education, students will develop an understanding and sense of appreciation for the environment. This Santa Clara County Office of Education program has reached over 250,000 students since it began 45 years ago.
Although Walden West is public school program, students must pay 90% of the cost for the outdoor school experience. In order to keep their cost down we lease our site on week-ends and conduct a summer day camp. Unfortunately our facility is aging and needed repairs are costly. We need volunteers to help defer repair costs so the amount charged to students stays as low as possible.
