Mission
St. John's Educational Thresholds Center (SJETC) works with young people and families to build healthy lives, schools and communities. The Administrative Office is located on 16th Street, in the heart of the North Mission.
Youth-In-Action Philosophy
SJETC puts young people in the lead, combining traditional academics with technology, the arts, and community action. We support young people’s ideas, courage, and determination to make their lives healthy and their neighborhood a peaceful place to grow and learn.
PROGRAMS
Tutoring Center
The Tutoring Center is located at Marshall Elementary School, Capp and 15th Streets, and provides a safe and stimulating environment. 100 Elementary School students from schools throughout the Mission are tutored here from 3 to 6 PM throughout the school year.
- 70 community volunteers - young people and adults - give generously of their time, knowledge, and friendship to make these services possible.
- Tutoring Center activities include educational enrichment, fine arts, life skills, computer training, and neighborhood improvement projects.
- The Tutoring Center provides summer school programming for Elementary School students.
SJETC Urban Institute
This afterschool and summer school program involves students in academics, community development, and art.
- Students investigate issues that affect their lives and their community and develop strategies for advocacy and change. Young activists carry out initiatives like changing negative images of youth.
- Urban institute projects engender citizenship, create a safer community, and demonstrate how young people themselves are our own best hope.
- Urban ArtWORKS participants create public art to convey their message of community unity.
- The Onward! Program offers college and job readiness skill-building to High School students.
Community Bridges Beacon (CBB)
Community Bridges Beacon creates a comprehensive continuum of services and opportunities for the 2,000 students and families of the North mission District. CBB provides children, youth and their families access to the health, academic, and family support services they need to succeed in school.
- Located at Everett Middle School, 450 Church Street, CBB links students and families to easily accessed services provided by a wide variety of health and social service agencies.
- CBB offers opportunities for youth development through tutoring, job training,a and case management.
- CBB provides cultural, arts, recreation, and sports activities during afterschool and weekend hours.
- Designed in collaboration with more than 100 families, CBB had its first full year of operation in 1994.
