San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park

San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park Docents share their unique
maritime knowledge with park visitors through educational programs and
informal contacts. This Active Docent opportunity is open to all US
Residents & the Territories thereof. All Active Maritime Volunteers MUST
have a signed and dated 301-A Volunteer Agreement form/ Application on
file in the volunteer office prior to any volunteer service being provided
to the park or program. Docent work indoors as well as outdoors, away from
water as well as over water, serving at the park’s visitor center,
maritime museum, Hyde Street Pier and other associated park contact
stations providing 30-minute walking tours and interpretive services
aboard the park’s small fleet of National Historic Landmark Ships (NHLS)
found moored alongside historic Hyde Street Pier. Hyde Street Pier is
located at the far west-end of world famous Fisherman’s Wharf with the
Maritime Museum just a short 5-minute walk from the pier while Park
Headquarters is located at Fort Mason Center, Building E 2nd Floor. Docent
duties include interacting with the general public, answering telephone
and inquiries into the fascinating history of San Francisco and Pacific
Coast maritime history including introducing visitors to the many
interesting and surrounding geographic locations and bay area National
Parks. Time Commitment: Normally a minimal time commitment of 10 per/month
is requested. However working with our volunteers and understanding
today’s challenging personal obligations a more conducive schedule may
be arranged between the Docent Coordinator and the interested individual.
Our active maritime docents are an incredibly friendly and outgoing group
to know and truly, a wonderful team to be a part of.
