Help Someone Learn English: Be a Volunteer Tutor

PARTNERS IN LEARNING, the tutoring program of Palo Alto Adult School and Sequoia Adult School, invites you to be a volunteer tutor. We offer free training and on-going support to all volunteers.
Tutors meet once or twice a week with student partners to work on English language skills, e.g. speaking, reading, writing, or citizenship. You do not have to speak a foreign language or have prior teaching experience. Join us for a short orientation to learn more about volunteering as a tutor and mark the training dates on your calendar.

Our student partners are adults who have come to the Mid-Peninsula from all over the world---Mexico, Central and South America, Russia, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

Many were highly educated in their own countries. Others have had little or no schooling. One thing all students share, however, is the motivation to learn English so that they can become contributing members of society.

Students entering PARTNERS IN LEARNING are assessed on their ability to understand, speak, read, and write English. There is no fee for enrollment, but many students choose to purchase a low cost workbook for their own use.

Our tutor partners come from a variety of backgrounds. They need only be able to read, write, and speak English themselves... and want to share those skills. Many tutors have retired from their professional lives, while others add tutoring time to an already busy schedule.

Tutors help their partners become more skilled and self confident, gain greater independence, and increase their ability to support themselves and their families.

Tutors themselves benefit in many ways. They enjoy sharing skills and learning about other countries and cultures. They make new friends and help our own community to work better.

PARTNERS IN LEARNING provides 9 hours of lively, interactive training to its volunteers. After completing the training, tutors are placed with an individual student, a small group, or in an ESL classroom. Tutors work with their learner once or twice a week for at least six months.

The goal of PARTNERS IN LEARNING is to meet the communication needs of students. Volunteers work with learners to identify these needs and to set goals. Instruction takes place in public places convenient to both tutor and learner.

PARTNERS IN LEARNING resource center supports tutors by providing materials, suggesting teaching strategies, and offering on- going workshops.
