Death is a normal part of life, yet our society does not adequately prepare us to deal with it.
During times when emotions are intense, support is often desired and needed, but not always
available. Family members may sometimes find it difficult to communicate with each other. In our
mobile society, they may be geographically separated from each other or from the person who is
dying. Many times feelings about death are considered "taboo" subjects.
KARA, from the Gothic root of the word "care", is a mid-peninsula based organization founded on
the belief that the emotional pain and isolation of the grieving process can be lessened if shared.
Volunteer Opportunities
KARA's trained volunteers provide emotional support to those living with grief related to life-threatening
illness or death.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- Counselors providing one-to-one emotional support to adults
- Facilitators for children and their families in the Children's Grief Counseling Program
- Volunteers to provide administrative support during Kara's office hours
- Auxiliary members in the Friends of Kara to support fundraising events
Trainings for counselors/facilitators are in the spring and fall. Please call for further information.
