GirlVentures Mentorship Program
Girl Ventures (http://www.girlventures.org) is a San Francisco-based
nonprofit dedicated to empowering adolescent girls to develop and express
their strengths. Our main programs are summer wilderness adventures that
include activities like backpacking, rock climbing, and sea kayaking, as
well as creative arts and community-building components. We strive to
create a safe place for girls to take healthy risks and to explore themes
relating to courage, leadership, trust, communication, self-care, body
image, conflict resolution and more.
Due to its community-wide success in San Francisco, we're offering our
unique rock climbing mentorship program, Girlz Climb On, for the fourth
year in the East Bay. During this 8-week program, 12 girls in grades 6-9
are paired one-on-one with an adult female mentor in order to learn how to
rock climb. In a structured environment using a well-developed curriculum,
mentors support girls learning technical rock climbing skills while
empowering girls to recognize their own strengths: courage, intuition,
leadership, creativity, body wisdom, compassion, curiosity, resilience,
communication, and more.
Girlz Climb On meets every Monday afternoon this spring from February 20
to April 10. The majority of the course takes place at the Berkeley
Ironworks Gym in Berkeley, but there are also: (1) a pre-course
orientation at a local ropes course on February 18, (2) an outdoor climb
on April 1 and (3) two required mentor trainings which will take place
prior to course start on February 13 and 16 from 6-9:00pm. These trainings
will give mentors an understanding of GirlVentures' curriculum, mission,
and values.
We are looking for female mentors age 21 and over able to commit to the
above dates. All levels of rock climbing experience are welcome.
Interviews may be required and selected mentors may be subject to a
background check. Women of color are encouraged to apply.

Volunteer Mentors Needed
The "Back on Track" Community-Based Mentoring Program, is a one-on-one
mentoring program for teens and young adults, who have recently undergone
rehabilitation for Traumatic Brian Injury (TBI), Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)
or other disability and are ready to return to active living by going to
college or getting a job. Our focus is to connect these individuals with
community resources and support they need to be successful. We are
currently searching for volunteer mentors who have life experience working
or going to college successfully and are interested in helping people who
have had a brain, spinal cord injury. The ideal mentor is someone who has
personal experience with TBI, SCI, or other disability, and/or students
who are interested in rehabilitation, physical medicine, Social Work, OT,
Speech Therapy, CTRS, ect. Mentors will receive a stipend of $100 per
month. In addition to the program coordinator, there will be a vocational
rehabilitation counselor and rehabilitation psychologist available to
support the mentoring relationships.

The YWCA Come Into The Sun program provides young women, aged 11 – 18, with highly trained

develop to their fullest potential. CITS pairs these at-risk girls, many of whom have been
referred by the juvenile justice or welfare systems, with an adult mentor who helps them
to increase academic success, explore career options and to improve their leadership and
independent living skills. The mentoring relationship lasts for a minimum of 18 months
with meetings every week.

After School Program in SF Needs Volunteers
The After-School Program at Twenty-First Century Academy (SFUSD) is made
possible through a collaboration between SFUSD's School Health Programs
Department and the Bayview YMCA. 21st Century Academy is an alternative
school serving youth in grades K-8. The After-School Program is an
extension
of the regular school day where children are exposed to literacy,

Fairmont Elementary School in San Francisco, Noe valley could use your help.
We need help in a number of areas. 70%
of our students come from low-income families, and are at high risk. Any
time donated here would be well worth the effort.
1. Library volunteers; casual dropin or scheduled weekly 1 to ? hours.
Drop in can help shelf books and aid students in finding and using library
resources. Scheduled volunteers will work with the same class(es) each
week during their library visit. Books are read outloud and the kids check
in and out their weekly reading books.
2. Computer lab; Help us keep our lab open and avaliable to the
community. Lunch time hours are in particular need of volunteers so we can
keep the lab (with 30 networked computers) open for use. This needs to be
a scheduled basis from i hour or more as you are able!
3.Geeking; We have alot of computer resources and a school wide network
and internet recources. There is a lot of debugging and problem-solving
that is needed.

Volunteer with "The Flying Doctors"
Physicians, dentists, optometrists, Spanish Interpreters, Pilots -
Los Medicos Voladores or Flying Doctors provides health services and education to the
people of Northern Mexico. LMV's primary purpose is to send medical teams on 4-day trips to
Mexico each month. Teams include a pilot, interpreter, medical professional (usually MD,
dentist or optometrist) and possibly a co-pilot or general volunteer. Trips originate from
Bay Area and Northern California cities including San Jose, Oakland, Sacramento, Auburn,
Truckee, and Monterey. Most trips currently go to Baja villages including Isla Cedros,
Bahia Tortugas, Isla Natividad, Mulege, San Ignacio and Ensenada. Trips are flown by LMV
pilots in a private planes. Members can also reach Ensenada by taking a commercial flight

NEW ! Homework Assistance Program at Neighborhood Computer Centers (NCC).
We are looking for volunteer tutors to assist children, ages 14
years and under, with homework and with basic computer tasks, especially
with using the internet. All we require is that volunteers have an interest
in working with children under 14 years of age, sensitivity to the needs of
diverse populations, and consistency. It would be helpful, but not
required, that volunteers have some knowledge of word processing and/or
another language (especially Chinese, Vietnamese, or Spanish). We ask for a
commitment of at least 1 hour a week for at least one semester (4-5 months). Our address is 655 Geary Street (btwn. Jones and Leavenworth), SF, CA 94102 and we are easily accessible by MUNI (lines 38 and 27) and BART (Powell).
Because you will be working with youth, consistency is greatly needed and
appreciated. The program runs Monday through Friday from 3:00-4:00pm,

Career Resources Development Center (CRDC) is a private, non-profit agency
that has been providing employment and educational services in the Bay Area
for 33 years. Neighborhood Computer Centers (NCC), founded in 1990, is a
nationally-recognized after-school program that strengthens the basic
skills, academic motivation, and self-esteem of economically and
educationally disadvantaged elementary and middle school children from San
Francisco's Tenderloin District. NCC classes offer hands-on activities
relating to science, math, and cultural diversity, and writing practice with
computers. The Homework Assistance Program, a program of NCC, is in its
first year serving youth under the age of 14, with homework assistance and
computer training.

The Women's Needs Center. The Women's Needs Center, a program of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinics, Inc. and San Francisco's ONLY free clinic for women. We are currently looking for new volunteers for an early March training. Training includes: Medical Assisting, Laboratory skills, Appointment scheduling, Client Intake, and Health Education.
